I use an Olivetti ECHOS P100D under linux for more than four years, but I have currently no time to put informations on line about this old laptop. Besides, I now have upgraded my laptop for a Lifebook...

Apmd Advanced Power Management under SuSE is managed by several layers : the apm kernel module, an apmd server and a script apmd-proxy. This page proposes some improvements to this script in order to increase battery performances and a kernel patch to correct some BIOS misbehaviour. Some settings are suggested to decrease power consumption.

Swsusp Software suspend is a kernel patch that provides the ability to suspend execution of the kernel without using any APM BIOS feature. This is really useful either if your BIOS is broken (for instance you have bought a larger disk than the original one and the BIOS is unable to handle it :-() or if you frequently swap from windows to linux because this feature allows you to save your linux session on disk instead of rebooting.
